How To Open Hemostats
Hemostats are wonderful tools. They act as a third set of hands when trying to do complex tasks. However, if nobody has ever told you how to open them, they can be a major source of frustration. So, before you use that brand new pair of hemostats as a dart aimed at the wall, here is a brief explanation of how to open them.
First, you need to understand how hemostats stay closed. Hemostats have a built in locking mechanism found just below where your fingers slip into the finger loops.

Close up, it looks like this:

As you can see, there are teeth on each side that lock into each other. In order to open the hemostats, you have to disengage the teeth. This is done by doing the following:
1) Insert your thumb up to the first knuckle into one of the loops and your middle finger up to the middle knuckle into the other.
2) Push the two loops inward, like this:
3) That will disengage the clamps…but they will re-engage if you just let go at this point. In order to get them to disengage and open, what you do, is while you are pushing inward, push the loop that has your thumb backwards and pull the loop that has your middle finger forward like this:

Doing that will totally disengage and open the hemostat clamp mechanism.
I know that this sounds very complicated, but it is actually very simple when you do it. Once you have it open the first time, you will never have any problems again.
